THE IMPORTANCE OF HONOURING AGREEMENTS (PART 2)
Jesus speaking in Matthew 18:19–20 (KJV) says,
“Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.”
This promise illustrates how corporate agreement, especially in prayer, activates God’s engagement. The pattern is simple.
1. You come into agreement with God.
2. You agree with your spouse.
3. You live in faithfulness to your spoken agreement.
After making an agreement and failing to keep it, don’t go looking for outsiders who weren’t in the room with you when you made the promise and agreement with your spouse.
Rather, stay faithful.
Research Discoveries
Social science research indicates that couples who engage in joint spiritual practices (prayer, worship, and shared service) report higher marital satisfaction and greater emotional closeness.
Research by the University of Texas at San Antonio, reported in the Journal of Marriage and Family in 2010, examined 2,400 couples. They focused on four things:
(1) The effect of a couple belonging to the same denomination
(2) Attending religious services together
(3) Shared beliefs and values, and
(4) What they did at home in the way of worship activities (i.e., reading the Bible and praying together).
As expected, couples who shared any of the four things reported higher satisfaction in their marriages than those who didn’t share them. But what’s fascinating is that rates were highest with those who prayed and/or read the Bible together at home.”
PRACTICAL ACTION POINTS FOR COUPLES
• Establish Clear Agreements
Take time to search through scriptures, discuss and agree on finances, parenting philosophies, household responsibilities, spiritual rhythms, and boundaries with family and friends.
Action Step: Draft a written “Marriage Covenant” or mission statement that outlines shared values, roles, financial principles (budgeting, tithing, emergency fund), parenting commitments, and conflict-resolution rules. Review and revise it quarterly.
• Communicate Openly And Honestly
Vulnerability is a part of intimacy. Practice transparent, compassionate communication. Share fears, hopes, disappointments, and celebrations without defensiveness.
Action Step: Schedule a weekly “marriage check-in” (15–30 minutes) to surface issues early. Use active listening methods and reflect on what your partner said before responding.
• Pray Together
Align your hearts to God’s Wisdom and Will for your lives. Invite God at the start of your decisions, deliberations, agreements and conflicts. Prayer centres the couple and shifts the focus from winning arguments to seeking God’s wisdom and perfect will.
Action Step: Start with 5–10 minutes daily. Use a simple structure (thanksgiving, confession, requests, and listening) and expand as you’re comfortable.
• Celebrate Your Agreements
Mark milestones and the faithful keeping of commitments. Celebrations reinforce the positive impact of agreed actions and create joyful memories.
Action Step: Create patterns, annual covenant renewal on your wedding anniversary, a yearly “goals retreat”, or small rewards when you accomplish shared milestones.
• Build Accountability And Seek Christian Professional Help
No couple is an island. Trusted mentors, a pastor, or a Christian counsellor can offer perspective, prayer, and guidance when agreements fray.
Action Step: Identify two trusted mentors, a Spirit-filled Christian counsellor, or a couples’ group and agree to meet with them when you need counsel or a third-party perspective.
• Practice Flexible Humility
Agreements should not become legalistic shackles. Life changes and agreements will need to be adapted. Approach revisions with humility, grace, and a willingness to re-establish expectations and agreements in love.
Action Step: When life changes—new child, job loss, relocation—revisit your covenant intentionally rather than letting resentment build.
CONCLUSION
The power of marriage agreement is a profound expression of God’s covenantal heart. When you intentionally create, honour, and pray over the agreements that govern your life together, you form a resilient partnership that reflects God’s faithfulness. Agreements give shape to relationship expectations, build trust, protect emotional safety, and open a channel for God’s presence and blessing.
Whatever you and your spouse choose to agree upon today will influence the course of your marriage in the near future. Tend to those agreements with prayer, mutual Word study and alignment with God, clarity, and mutual respect. Embrace the sacredness of your covenant, and allow it to guide you in building a loving, respectful, and enduring marriage.
