THE IMPORTANCE OF HONOURING AGREEMENTS
• Building Trust and Respect
Keeping the agreements you make is foundational to trust. When spouses consistently honour their word, they create a predictable, reliable environment where emotional safety and intimacy can grow.
Proverbs 25:14 (KJV) says:
Whoso boasts himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
This warns against empty promises and highlights the value of integrity, doing what you say you will do, establishing your character and strengthening the bond with your partner.
When your words can be relied upon by your spouse, your life will become a tangible reflection of God and His Character. You become an extension of God’s Love to your spouse, and you’ll begin to know a depth of God and His presence in your home beyond your wildest imagination.
• Creating A Safe Environment
When agreements are honoured, both partners feel respected and valued. Predictability in actions creates space for vulnerability, allowing each spouse to bring their full self into the relationship without fear of betrayal or repeated disappointment.
Many couples today who complain of suspicion in their relationship have arrived at this point of distrust through a pattern of repeated unfaithfulness in keeping their words spoken.
Ephesians 4:3 (KJV) says,
Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Maintaining unity requires an intentional commitment to peace, which is cultivated when spouses honour one another’s expectations and commitments.
• Recent Discoveries
Relationship researchers consistently find that perceived partner reliability and commitment predict marital satisfaction.
For example, Ey Kiersten. “Building Trust in Marriage: The Crucial Role of Keeping Your Word,” The Marriage Point, 27 Jan. 2026, establishes that “Following through on what you say makes your partner feel safe, valued, and secure—echoing the principles of secure attachment in psychology.
Without this reliability, anxiety emerges: ‘Can I truly depend on you?’ Research from the Gottman Institute shows that couples with strong trust enjoy higher satisfaction and longer-lasting relationships.”
These are age-old truths that seem to be lost in our generation amidst the pressures and chaos of life! Will you return to this timeless truth today?
THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION OF AGREEMENT
• God’s Role In Agreements
God witnesses agreements made between spouses. The marital covenant is not only a human promise but also a spiritual commitment that exists before the Lord. When couples enter agreements in His presence, they invite divine accountability and blessing.
The Preacher, who spoke as inspired of the Lord in Ecclesiastes 4:12 (KJV), unveils
And if one prevails against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
This is the image of the threefold cord (God, Husband, and Wife). This captures the power of unity: when two are agreed with God at the centre, the relationship acquires supernatural strength and endurance, regardless of what has been arrayed against it.
• The Power Of Collective Prayer
Prayer is not a religious rite; rather, it is an active communication and connection with God through spoken words.
So when couples agree together in prayer, they align their wills with God’s will and invite His power into their household. Agreement in prayer cultivates spiritual unity that affects decisions, emotional climate, and the couple’s ability to persevere.
Whenever the husband wants to go north but the wife prefers south, and vice versa, something is amiss, and most times it is a lack of agreement and fervency on the prayer altar as one.
You’ve prayed apart enough. It’s time for you both to get together in prayer, come into agreement with God concerning that issue, and allow the Lord to move in your hearts and life for His Glory.
