The Power of Agreement in Marriage: A Covenant Perspective
Marriage is more than a legal arrangement or a social expectation. It is a sacred covenant established by God and lived out through the daily agreements husband and wife make with one another.
When spouses intentionally align their hearts, choices, and prayers, their union reflects God’s design and gains resilience in the face of life’s pressures.
Today, we’ll be exploring the biblical foundation, spiritual meaning, practical application, and life-tested wisdom behind agreement in marriage, helping dating couples and married couples translate Biblical wisdom into relationship habits which strengthen intimacy, trust, and purpose.
UNDERSTANDING THE ESSENCE OF MARITAL AGREEMENT
• What Does an Agreement Mean in Marriage
A marriage agreement is a mutual understanding and commitment between spouses about specific choices and decisions, both individually and collectively.
This includes agreements on roles, responsibilities, priorities, preferences and shared goals. It is more than a list of rules. It is an expression of covenantal intent that shapes how two people would walk together through ordinary days and difficult seasons.
For example, Janet and Ken may agree that Janet has a specific gift in entrepreneurship, and Ken would not stop her from pursuing her dreams but would support her, both at home and in her business decisions. This can work vice versa as well; Ken might be the one with the entrepreneurial gift, and Janet agrees to support him both at home and in making business decisions.
Please note that the scenarios are endless and the possibilities are infinite according to the guidance of God’s word. Still, it is noteworthy that the agreement remains true only when it is honoured.
This means that when the rubber hits the road, Janet and Ken must be found sticking to their agreement in joy, peace, harmony, love, and endurance. One must not seek to back out; rather, at each crossroad, they must both seek to scale and press deeper, enhancing and honouring that agreement in Covenant.
Amos 3:3 (KJV) unveils the foundation for the Covenant of Agreements in this wise:
“Can two walk together except they be agreed?”
This short, pointed question underlines the Truth that unity of direction and purpose is the prerequisite for journeying together. Agreement is not optional for couples who intend to move forward in harmony. It’s not a random choice we make. It is a quality decision you enter into, ready to stay the course regardless.
• Covenantal Nature of Agreements.
In today’s world, where attention and focus are in short supply at an alarming rate, agreements are broken without thought, and annulments seem the order of the day, it is pivotal to understand that marital agreements are a key part of the Marital Covenant you enter into. God as your Witness notes it, affirms it, seals it and upholds it between you and your spouse or fiancé.
Thus, agreements between husband and wife function as micro‑covenants within the larger covenantal reality established by God. They reflect mutual commitment and accountability, which mirrors the faithfulness and intentionality of God’s own covenantal love to us.
It is noteworthy that marital agreements are never to be broken. As an integral part of your Marital Covenant, you are both held accountable by God, according to the content of your marital agreements. Many think the only agreement they are to uphold in marriage is the laws of God; hence, they ignore and dishonour the specific agreements they made with their spouse before marriage or during marriage.
This is not God’s intent. Rather, the very nature of the marital agreement calls you to a life of commitment, faithfulness and accountability to your Covenant Agreements.
Malachi 2:13-15 (KJV) establishes God’s heart regarding the matter, saying:
“13. And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand. 14. Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth..”
The word ‘treacherously’ in this verse means ‘deceitfully’. This means being unfaithful and deceitful in your agreements with your spouse. This verse makes it clear that God sees and holds spouses accountable to the faithfulness of their Covenant.
Don’t make a promise to your fiancé, fiancée or spouse and not keep it; count the cost before you open your mouth. Don’t make that promise and later say, ‘I didn’t bargain for all this expense. That’s not good; that’s not God’s Covenant Path, and that is definitely not His Nature in Christ’s Covenant Love.
• Agreements and Commitments.
Psalm 15 unveils God’s definition of Holiness, and in verse 4, He reveals a profound Truth about promises and agreements. He says the one who will ascend into the Holy Hill of the Lord is ‘he who swears to his own hurt and changes not’.
We are called to be like God, and God never lies; indeed, He swore His Covenant Promises to us by Himself and has stood by them all from eternity to eternity.
Hence, Hebrews 6:16-19 KJV says:
16. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. 17. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18. That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19. Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.”
God is revealing to us a very integral part of His identity: faithfulness, commitment, and steadfastness. This is why we can hang on His words and be certain that He is who He says He is and that He would never fail nor deceive us. Marital agreements need to be this way. You don’t make a promise today and change your mind tomorrow. You don’t agree with something yesterday and rely on the agreement today; that doesn’t make for a strong marital bond, and it fosters weakness and degenerates into strife.
Why do you pray to the Lord daily? Is it just routine to you, or is it because you know He hears us and will answer our prayers, just as He said? If the latter is your answer, why then don’t you want to be a man/woman of your word in that marriage? If God’s Word is His Bond (Hebrews 6:13) and you are sons and daughters of God, then your words ought to be your Bond.
By this, you prove that you’re one with God through your God-like character every day. In my years of counselling as a Marriage Counsellor, I’ve found that a key factor in misunderstanding and strife in homes is a lack of commitment to agreements. The woman agrees to something and doesn’t keep to it, and the man makes a promise and never does it.
God’s Presence and Authority back your words. When you fail to keep them, you have gone against the very power which ought to back you up and defend your family. Remember, the Lord is a God of knowledge, in whom actions are weighed (1 Samuel 2:3).
